Quote:
""Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt
This quote encapsulates how I've always felt about running. I understand how hard it is some days. It's really not easy to push yourself to be faster and to go farther than you ever have before. Pushing these limits asks yourself to go beyond what your body and mind have currently been capable of up to this point. Venturing into these areas of the unknown are where you grow the most. You learn a lot about yourself when you hit a PR or finish a race. But you also learn a lot when you fall short and have to find the determination to try again. Running is what living is all about!
Intro:
As February draws to a close, I'm writing this on a sunny 64-degree day. It's a pleasant surprise after the month's less-than-ideal weather. Like many others, I've been grinding through these training runs, but there's nothing more motivating than seeing so many runners, whether in groups or solo, still out there getting it done. I can never give enough credit to living in a city with races like the Pig that keep people motivated nearly year-round. We're nearly through the winter so hang in there for just a bit longer! The picture below is from the day I managed to run 20 miles on the treadmill. Normally, I struggle to get through just 3 miles—so you can imagine how fed up I've been with the weather!

More events and races popping up as the warm weather rolls in. March always seems to be the month where we all get our hopes up that the winter weather is behind us. The forecast for the next couple weeks is looking good, but we will see. Fingers crossed the Heart Mini doesn't get the yearly cold temps it seems to have. Truly nothing better than running up Torrence while it's 20 degrees!

Cincy Runner Spotlight: Ryan Embley
This week's spotlight is Ryan Embley. He's a physical therapist at Beyond Exercise and is truly one of the best! He has helped me personally navigate injury and improve my strength training. He's passionate about runners and always expanding his knowledge. Read the bio on him below!
Ryan Embley is native to Utah, but has been living in Cincinnati for the last 4 years. Prior to Cincinnati, he lived in Eugene, Oregon. Ryan enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys being active in endurance sports, including running, cycling, and soccer, among others. He has completed multiple triathlons and is always looking for ways to push his endurance limits in his next big race. Other hobbies include woodworking, learning to play the cello, and kayaking.

Dr. Ryan Embley PT, DPT, OCS, CMPT, ATC earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Brigham Young University in 2011 and worked as a Certified Athletic Trainer before attending physical therapy school. Throughout his undergraduate studies he served Division I athletes in cross country, track and field, men’s basketball, men’s volleyball, baseball, and football. Ryan received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Emory University in 2016 and has since served individuals with varying orthopedic conditions. Since 2016, he has received additional certifications in manual therapy, bike fitting, vestibular rehabilitation, Astym, functional movement, and he continually pushes himself to learn new rehabilitation techniques. In 2019, after completing a two-year residency program, Ryan became recognized as a Board-Certified Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. His specific interests include evaluating and treating running-related injuries. In 2021, he was selected to serve on the medical staff for the USATF Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

Ryan has a passion for assessing functional movement patterns and applying manual therapy techniques to effectively address the source of orthopedic injuries. Running is very repetitive so abnormal movement patterns are easily exacerbated. Running is about improving efficiency for maximum performance which is why breathing, muscle activation, functional movement, mobility, and tissue tolerance are essential for long term health as a runner.

Cincy Running Historical Moment: World Record Holder races at Withrow
Back in 1943, the Swedish distance runner, Gunder Hägg, toured America racing against some of the countries best runners. He stopped at eight locations through out the United States, with one of them being Withrow High School in Cincinnati! This happened on August 7th that year.

Per his request, they set forth the race at 2 miles. He had a few runners to either rabbit for him or compete against. Gunder won and completed the 2-mile race in 8:51.3, just 3.5 seconds shy of his world record. At that time, this was the fastest 2-mile run ever recorded on American soil. A truly amazing feat at one of the local high school track's that many of us train at today!

Bob Roncker already did a fantastic write up to this awesome piece of history, so I won't reiterate. Check out the full story here: https://gcincyrunhistory.blogspot.com/2016/06/v-1-28-world-record-holder-races-in.html
Strava Segment Highlight: Mariemont Gardens
The Mariemont Gardens feel like a hidden gem. I love popping down there on summer days and hitting some of the gravel/dirt trails by the river. It's not huge but you can get some solid miles in with a few loops around it all.

The segment is an all gravel loop for some semi soft-surface running on the east side of Cincy. Nice change of pace from the constant pounding of pavement!
Training Tip:
Do what feels right for you each day. Sticking to a training plan or maintaining a running streak can be beneficial, but it's easy to get caught up in it. Personally, I sometimes feel guilty for taking a day off, which is absurd! There are certainly times when it's important to find motivation and push yourself when you don't want to, but not always. Prioritize what's best for your physical and mental well-being each day, whether it's a run, walk, yoga, or even resting. Staying healthy and mentally prepared is far more important than any number on Strava.
